High yield, low cost of cultivation and long shelf life are the ultimate criterion of the desirability of Runner (Bold) peanuts. Its nutritional value associated with the quality of unsaturated good fats.

Introduction

Runner or Bold variety has large size and premium characteristics. This market type exhibits higher oil content than the other types of peanuts, and primarily are grown in Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Bold variety accounts for 40% of total production in India.

Economic Importance & health benefits

Runner type peanuts are less expansive to grow than Virginia market types due to a lower requirement for gypsum. Among various botanical types, the largest average pod weight and high yield was in the runner type as (173.8 g) followed by Virginia type (161.3 g), Dragon type (142.3 g), Spanish type (133.5 g), and Valencia type (124.0 g).

The pod maturity in Bold is 10% higher than Virginia and 5% higher than Spanish. For mature peanuts, average total oil was reported as 50.7% for runners, 47.2% for Virginias, and 49.2% for Spanish on a fresh weight basis.

Runner variety show more resistance to leaf spot, chronic plant and other common peanut plant diseases while Spanish varieties are most susceptible to diseases and Virginia types show intermediate resistance.

The PUFA rich runner variety possess strong anti-inflammatory property which lowers the risk of heart diseases, Alzheimer’s, improves nerve function, blood clotting, brain health, and muscle strength makes it healthier than Spanish varieties.

Under same growing conditions runner varieties have higher levels of α, γ and δ tocopherols than the Spanish varieties which makes runner variety more stable while cooking and longer shelf life.
