Peanut Market News February 16, 2018
Argentine reported that the lack of rainfall during the last period in great part of the peanut area and the continuity of the heat wave throughout the central region of Argentina explain the deepening of water stress the peanuts suffer from, and the worry the sector regarding the expected productive potentials.
The combination of high temperatures and lack of rains has caused in those environments that the peanut plants suffer from permanent water stress and under these conditions, the cultivars did not cover the between-rows. Under such critical situation, we consider that these productive regions must already consider irreversible damages under the possibilities of achieving high yields.
To date, February 12, 2018, we must also mention that there are areas within the different regions with conditions where the soils´ moisture is still adequate and the vegetative / productive state of the peanut cultivars is acceptable and with very good productive potential.
The vegetative and productive development slows down due to the lack of rain, and even if it rained soon, - prediction that the weather forecasts do not indicate -, every day that passes, it reduces the suitable weather condition for the fruits to mature correctly.
We consider that as it did not rain a lot in the entire peanut area during the period that ended, it makes the potential Argentine crop enter in a stage of unknown prediction.
In addition, regarding the rainfall situation for the next 15 to 20 days, it can begin to be defined if those potentials improve or collapse in a significant way, contrasting with what happened in recent years.
As you can see, the situation of the crop is very critical and uneven.
We are over the critical situation and over the critical month of FEBRUARY, so, it is very early to make yields and production projections.
